The accused have been identified as Veerakumar (26) of Oddanchatram in Dindigul district and Dhamodharan (22), from Bengaluru. Police said that the duo resided in Pallavaram and worked for a call taxi service in Anna Nagar.

Recently, the police received a information regarding two thieves, from another cab driver, and conducted investigation. Based on the information, police nabbed them.

Elaborating on their modus operandi, police said that the duo used to befriend other taxi drivers and create duplicate keys for their vehicles. Later, they would follow the vehicles and when the drivers were not around, they would drive away the four-wheelers using the duplicate keys.

Police added Veerakumar and Dhamodharan are just the tail-end workers of a huge network, which will transport the cars to places like Dindigul, Tirunelveli, Kodaikanal and Kerala.

“Once the car is shifted from one person to another, it is difficult to trace it. They ply the cars using fake numbers,” added a cop, who was part of the team which nabbed the duo.

Four cars have been recovered from the accused, who have been remanded in judicial custody. Further investigation is on to bust the network, police sources said.
