Officials said that the 475-metre-long and 17.2-metre-wide flyover was proposed in 2010 to be built at the Porur intersection, which is known for heavy traffic jam. However, the State Highways (Metro Wing) faced some difficulties in proceeding with the works even after a sizeable number of pillars came up in the junction.
Finally, the SH department floated a tender and the work began in 2015. “We needed to overcome many hurdles in the beginning and handle issues like shifting of metro water connection going through the intersection. However, works were apace after 2015 and the flyover will be ready by the end of this month and can be inaugurated next month,” said a senior engineer of State Highways.
We hope that traffic congestion in the intersection would be on the decline after opening the flyover,” he added. Meanwhile, residents and motorists heaved a sigh of relief on informed that the flyover will be opened soon.
“I changed my home from Iyyappanthangal to Guindy, mainly because of traffic jam in the intersection two years ago. If the flyover is opened, the traffic will reduce,” said S Kirubakaran, a bank employee. Since the volume of vehicle is on the rise in the city, the government and authorities concerned should inspect and construct flyovers fast in necessary points, he demanded.
R Kanagaraj, a resident of Porur, said, the vicinity of the interjection would, during construction, witness heavy smoke and dust. “Now, it has come down as the construction is almost over. But, the officials should not postpone the inauguration after completion of works,” he said.
