CBI registered a case against A Kumaresan and other I-T officials following a complaint from M Murugaboopathy, Additional Commissioner of I-T, Chennai, alleging that the former had committed a refund fraud with the help of unknown public servants.
Kumaresan allegedly entered a criminal conspiracy with the others and prepared accounts for I-T returns, e-tax returns and VAT returns with the fraudulent intention of helping the assesses by under-reporting the income and inflating the claim of deduction. This resulted in the assesses obtaining refunds of all amounts deducted through TDS.
The Additional Commissioner alleged that Kumaresan received 10 per cent of the fraudulent returns he managed to secure for the assesses. CBI sources said Kumaresan increased the amounts of subscriptions qualifying under Section 80 C. He then claimed full refunds for the tax deducted. CBI officials said that Kumaresan had helped 1,055 persons get refunds in similar fashion.
