The residents had requested the civic body to ensure that inner areas like TANSI Nagar, LIC Colony and other such localities, do not get flooded during the monsoons, by diverting the water to the macro canal.

A Corporation official said that the civic body had initiated the inspection, to accommodate the residents’ requests. “The canal work is carried out by Highways Department and PWD. So, the Corporation, which is in charge of ensuring the areas under it are not flood-prone, called for the joint inspection. We identified three areas in Velachery and three more in Taramani, which can be linked to the macro canal, through concrete culverts. The side drains too will be connected to the canal,” added the source.

Kumararaja, Vice President, Federation of Velachery Residents Welfare Association, said that they had been requesting the authorities to offer a link  to the macro canal, since the inner areas tend to get flooded during monsoon. “The officials inspected the canal and have agreed to do so. Once this canal work is completed, it will help immensely as inner localities will not be badly flooded during the rainy season,” he said.
