So, the city police will be registering cases against policemen who were caught riding a bike without a helmet or a driving a car without fastening the seat belt. Penalties will be levied if a policeman is caught speaking on the cell phone while driving and if he engages in rash or negligent driving. “Our idea is to make the police force a role model for the citizens.
CoP already issued an order in this regard and no policeman who engage in violation of traffic rules will be spared,” MC Sarangan, additional commissioner of police, Chennai South, told DTNext. As a first step, ahead of implementing the strict rule, policemen are now being sensitised for the need of better behaviour in public. “We are sensitising them to follow all motor vehicle rules while riding a bike. Policemen have no immunity against traffic violations and they are also liable to be punished for such violations,” Sarangan said.
Sensitization classes are now being held at every police station, telling the policemen not to violate traffic rules and to wear helmets while riding. The traffic and law and order special squads will start stopping policemen who are seen riding a bike without helmet and charge memos will be issued, officials said.
