The official said that the main accused are Vinoth alias Karukka Vinoth (35) and Mani alias Deo Mani (23), along with four others — Manikandan (20), Iyappan alias Ashwin (21), Arun (18) and Karthik (35).

Apart from Karthik, the rest are from Kannagi Nagar. “Mani knew that Teynampet police are helping and giving inputs to the Pondy Bazaar police in connection with a case and hence decided to scare the policemen at Teynampet police station. He along with Vinoth planned to hurl lighted kerosene-filled bottles at the station. While five of them were directly involved in the crime, one was held for hatching the conspiracy,” the Joint Commissioner said.

All of them have been booked under charges such as attempt-to-murder and possession of explosive materials. Two bikes too have been seized from them. Refuting theories that the CCTV at the Teynampet police station was dysfunctional, he said the footage played a vital role in nabbing the criminals.

“One of the CCTVs was an old model, so retrieving the footage took time. But it helped us to identify the miscreants. We also found out that they spied on the station for the last few days on bikes,” he said.

According to him, most of the police stations in Chennai South have been brought under CCTV surveillance. The official also said the para force personnel were also present at the station at the time of incident. As per the CCTV footage, the incident happened after 4 am on Thursday (July 13), five men on three bikes hurled lighted bottles filled with kerosene at the station. None was injured in the incident.
