Sources said that as the students resorted to violence and started attacking the vehicles passing by, cops chased them away and detained 13 of them for interrogation. The protest was staged on the day when the college administration had summoned 65 students, who were recently suspended over a group clash within the college premises, along with their parents for a counselling session.
Meanwhile, the college Principal Kalidas said that out of 34 students called for counselling along with parents on Monday, only 17 turned up. “They were all re-admitted after a warning. We showed the students’ poor attendance to their parents and asked them to make sure that they don’t miss out classes. All of them were first-year students involved in a group clash,” the Principal said.
The other suspended senior students (31 of them) have been asked to appear for counselling on Tuesday, he added. About Monday’s road blockade attempt, Kalidas said that it was organised by a student organisation in support of Kathiramangalam farmers, who are protesting against the ONGC’s oil exploration project, in their village. He also added that Pachaiyappa’s students, who were standing at the bus stop, were also detained by police. “The were released after I gave an undertaking to the police,” he said.
