The State Highways (Metro Wing) officials have confirmed that the construction of over bridge has been completed and it is ready to be opened. The officials attributed the delay to the land acquisition and stiff opposition from the public. The 550-metre-long (two-way)-Tiruvottiyur-Manali road bridge had similar issues.

The officials took up works of the over bridge in 2014 at a cost of Rs 47 crore and it was to be completed by 2016. Further, the work was stalled, since officials faced difficulties in acquiring land belonging to two temples.

With traffic already choking north Chennai, the incomplete project added to the inconvenience of the motorists.  Similarly, the second arm of Y-shaped Vyasarpadi flyover was opened in 2015 between basin bridge road and Kalyanapuram and officials faced a lot of hurdles in constructing the second arm, which connected to Erukkanchery. A senior official (SH Metro Wing) admitted that they could not complete the construction of flyovers within the prescribed time.

“Firstly, land acquisition was one of the main issues. Even though residents in the beginning agreed to provide lands, they made a U-turn during works,” a senior engineer told.

Construct flyovers after study: Activists
Meanwhile, activists have expressed displeasure over the delay in construction of flyovers and road bridges and they opine that officials should take up any road related project after conducting proper study and sorting out the issues like land acquisition and settling compensations. Daniel Robinson, Programme Manager, Chennai City Connect, said, “Going by the present scenario, the SH officials have constructed a number of flyovers and they would have learnt lessons about difficulties the during works.”  The reason for delaying two bridges was that the officials did not conduct any study before they started works, he added.
