Independence Day celebrations: 15,000 cops deployed for security in city

On the occasion of 71st Independence Day celebrations in the city, nearly 15,000 police personnel have been deployed to prevent any untoward incidents.

On Sunday, Director General of Police T K Rajendran had issued a circular to beef up security at all important places across the state, following an alert from security agencies of possible terror attacks. Across the state, nearly one lakh police personnel have been deployed for the Independence Day celebrations. However, there were no preventive arrests made, said police sources. 

From Sunday, cops have been conducting searches at hotels and resorts as also making vehicle checks at important junctions. A heavy posse of police were seen at important landmarks such as Chennai Central, Egmore, Koyambedu and Chennai Airport, where people gather in large numbers. 

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy will hoist the tri-colour flag at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
