The deceased, S Kishore (15) of Velachery and V Deepak (15) of Little Mount, came to Marina along with nine other students — all students of Guru Nanak School in Velachery —  to practise football, said police officials.

After they finished playing on the beach, Kishore, Deepak and Santhosh went near the water around 9.30 am to wash their legs. As Santhosh was pulled into the sea by a huge wave, Kishore and Deepak rushed to his rescue. While Santhosh managed to reach the shore, the other two drowned in the sea.

Hearing their cries for help, fishermen and cops on duty rushed to the spot, but by the time they were rescued, both had died. Santhosh was rushed to RGGGH, where he is undergoing treatment.

Kishore’s father Shankar is an MTC conductor, while Deepak’s father Vadivel is a daily wage labourer at a sofa manufacturing unit. Deepak’s family has already lost their daughter in a similar incident.

Guru Nanak School Physical Education teacher Bharath, who was also at the spot, told police that he had gone to get refreshments for the students after the practice session and asked them not to venture into sea.

Police sources said that at least four drownings had been reported on the Marina coast in the last month.
