With both preconditions laid down by OPS-led AIADMK(PTA) being met, even if not entirely, the merger of the two factions is expected very soon.

Sources in both the camps confirmed that even the modalities of sharing power were being worked out by both camps in the background. “With the questions over the legality of Sasikala holding the general secretary post still pending with the Election Commission of India, there is no question of appointing another general secretary as of now,” an AIADMK(PTA) source said. “However, we are working out an interim arrangement until that issue is resolved.”

According to reliable sources, both OPS and EPS camps might agree upon forming an intermediate joint committee to run the party comprising members of both factions until the EC comes up with a decision. Besides, the OPS camp is also negotiating for key ministerial positions including Home, Prohibition and even a deputy CM post to ensure their share in the governance. Sources also said that a united AIADMK might even support the central government and secure a ministerial berth or two in the union cabinet.

Meanwhile, political analysts have flayed the development as a hogwash. Madras university professor of Political Science Dr Ramu Manivannan was said, “They are playing opportunistic politics. What is the need to keep quiet for three months and now announce the inquiry? Did they not know that all people had suspicions about Jayalalithaa’s death and that this should have been removed immediately?”

Political analyst A Marx said, “Both groups are playing politics by first creating doubts in the minds of the people and using it to divert the attention of the people from other issues. In that sense, it is a welcome move as now the government can now concentrate on governance.”
