According to officials, since the hospital officials failed to take up renovation works at regular intervals, such matters has become quite common. On July, 29, a part of the ceiling had fallen off and injured a nurse.
The police said that when cancer patients were on their beds (ward number1,001), a portion of the fell crashing down. Terrified with the incident, patients started running helter- skelter. Among them, a woman fainted but was given medical care immediately.
According to sources, staff and patients raised apprehension due to such frequent incidents and demanded that the authorities renovate the place as soon as possible. “The counselling process is also underway and their safety is in question,” a source said. The building was constructed in 2011, during DMK regime, for new Assembly at the cost of Rs 479 crore. However, the next AIADMK government converted the building into multi super with an added expenditure of Rs 143 crore.
