The Subbarayan Street school is for boys, while the residential school in Saidapet is for girls. These schools have a capacity of 60 students each.
Every year, students who perform well in the Class 9 and Class 11 examinations are selected for the residential schools, where they have continuous teaching and mentoring. A senior Corporation official said, “In these two schools, we already offer coaching for various engineering entrance examinations, apart from that for the regular syllabus.
Now, we will also be looking to provide NEET coaching to students in these centres.”
According to him, the details are still being worked out. “The selection of students for these residential schools is not yet done for this year.
We are still working on the details of the NEET coaching, where roping in professionals for training the students is one of the options,” he added.
The civic body runs 281 schools across the city. The students, who are enrolled in the residential school, under the ‘Spark program for gifted students’, are chosen based on their marks, added another official. Last year, 65 students (40 girls and 25 boys) were chosen for this programme and were given extra coaching by the teachers.
Last year, 25 students were coached for competitive exams. For the last academic year (2016-2017), Corporation-run schools achieved a pass percentage of 93.1 in the Class 10 board exams and 88.7 in Class 12 board examinations.
