As part of the drive as many as 5500 saplings (3150 teak and 500 red sanders) were planted on the campus. Officials said that 350 rose wood saplings, 1500 fruit bearing plants would also be planted on the 200-acre campus. “In 15-20 years, the place will be full of teak and red sander trees,” noted Puzhal jail superintendent A Murugesan.

The project, supported by Rotary International, was launched by the ADGP (Prisons) Ashutosh Shukla in the presence of Tiruvallur collector E Sundaravalli.

Jail officials said that more than 3000 pits have been dug up for planting the saplings. “The job, which will involve inhouse manpower, will be over in three weeks,” the jail official added.
