Corporation reviews measures to tackle north east monsoon

With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting the onset of Northeast monsoon over southern peninsular India around October 26, the Greater Chennai Corporation revealed the measures taken to ensure that the city is prepared to tackle the vagaries of the upcoming season.

At a meeting held at Ripon Building on Tuesday, Harmander Singh, Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS) department took stock of the preparedness for the northeast monsoons, and dengue prevention measures being taken in the city. 

The Corporation has identified the localities which were severely flooded in the past and deployed enough high-powered pumping machines in these localities. The Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has been directed to ensure that the 219 filling stations are kept ready to distribute water. The Fisheries Department should identify owners of boats and certified swimmers, in view of evacuation is required. 

A total of 22 subways under Corporation control and six under Highways Department have been identified for potential waterlogging and steps have been taken. 60 high-power pumping machines have been provided. Tree cutting machines have been arranged. 

With dengue posing a huge challenge for the local administration, inspection of mosquito breeding sources has been ongoing assiduously. The civic body has so far inspected 348 hospitals, 1,727 private companies, 1,786 sites under construction, 1,272 commercial complexes, 789 government buildings while 9964 building owners have been sent notices. A total sum of Rs 25,76,800 has been collected as penalty. 

The Corporation has been monitoring fever cases, both in-patient and through Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP). The medical teams have scanned 4,61,643 people and identified 6,998 fever cases, out of which 164 cases were referred for advance treatment. The Corporation will also be continuing its awareness programs focussed towards dengue prevention and include Amma Canteens, schools, bus stands and railway stations within their ambit.

  • Repair works costing Rs 7.43 crore undertaken.
  • Out of 376 km of SWD works in extended areas, 299 km of drains laid Encroachments are being removed from the Adyar and Cooum river banks.
  • Out of 14,257 encroachments on Cooum, 825 families were resettled.
  • In Adyar, out of 9,687 encroachments, 4,134 families have been resettled.
  • 60 high-power pumping machines have been provided. Tree cutting machines have been arranged.
  • 138 primary healthcare centres identified for medical camps. 18 towers with lights for rescue operations.
  • 3337 malaria workers, 420 fumigation machines, 245 handheld sprayers and 41 fumigation vehicles on standby.
  • 109 rescue boats if evacuation is required and 176 shelters have been identified along with four common kitchens to provide food. 44 medical teams on standby, to prevent disease outbreak during monsoons.
