The Communist leader who inspected the area on Thursday said the ash had been dumped in an area of 750 acres and water flow had stopped near the estuary. The sand which had collected in the spot should also be removed and action initiated for free flow of rivers.

The place had become unsuitable for living. The CPI(M) had already held a hunger protest to highlight the issue, he said. Ramakrishnan also warned that the party would mobilise people and move to the next stage of agitations if the government did not take action.

Since the estuary had been blocked North Chennai could be flooded if the Kosasthalam river flowing into the sea was stopped. He also said a temporary road had been laid across the river to carry coal and this could disperse the floods to the nearby areas.
