This is the second time the visitors’ fare has been increased since the new airport was inaugurated in 2013. While it was initially Rs 60, it was hiked to Rs 70 in 2015.
The authorities have more than one reason to justify their decision. “It has become difficult to handle cash, as we often run out of 10-rupee notes. So, we wanted to round it up. Also, we want to reduce the footfall in order to reduce the congestion as well, for security reasons,” said airport authorities.
While nearly 1,000 tickets are sold at the arrival area of the international terminal, more than 1,400 tickets are sold at the departure place daily, added the airport sources.
However, the sudden hike in the fare without any prior intimation has received mixed reactions from visitors of the airport. Apart from the kin of passengers, people from villages, who have never had an opportunity to fly, buy the tickets to see how it looks like inside the airport.
