Added to that, they also had to manage the VIP movement on Anna Salai at Nandanam, where political leaders arrived to garland the statue of MuthuramalingaThevar, on his birth anniversary. “Whereever there was waterlogging, we kept informing the Corporation officials, who cleared it on a war-footing. By afternoon, the waterlogging was cleared in most of the roads. But after another spell of heavy rains in the evening, the roads were flooded again.

Traffic jams were seen in certain localities due to water logging, but by 9 pm almost all the bottlenecks were cleared. But in North Chennai, certain areas remained to be cleared as some subways were flooded,” said a traffic police official.

According to another traffic police official who had personally experienced the heavy rains while travelling on the city roads during the evening, the visibility was very poor. “We were told that there was some cloudburst- related heavy rain. Visibility was not even 10 metres,” he added.
