AIADMK on backfoot over woes

The onset of the North-East monsoon, accompanied by heavy showers, has shifted the focus away from the power struggle in the ruling AIADMK and the uncertainty surrounding the state government, as Opposition parties charged the government with lack of precautionary measures, to avert inundation and water logging.

The ruling party factions have confined their fights to the Election Commission hearing on the ‘Two Leaves’ symbol. Meanwhile, the ministers are busy defending the government’s desilting and storm water drain works. 

The war of words on monsoon preparedness began, with the CPI state secretary, R Mutharasan, flaying Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar on the latter’s remarks that rains would cause inundation. The state government failed to take precautionary measures, the CPI leader alleged. The usual political activities of Opposition leaders had been replaced by visits to rain-hit areas and meeting the affected residents.
