The 50-year-old foreigner found the cash missing when he checked his wallet while he was vacating the hotel on Wednesday.
The tourist, Williams, hailing from Canada, was heading back home when he found the cash missing.
“We are browsing through the CCTV footage of Leela Palace hotel where he was staying to find out if somebody had entered his room, where he stayed for a couple of days,” Foreshore Estate police said.
As Williams was not sure where and when the theft happened, the police are browsing through all the video clips from the hotel.
“The tourist believes that somebody could have stolen his money during his stay at the hotel. That is why our probe is focussed in the hotel now. So far, we have not zeroed in on any suspect. The probe is still on,” the police claimed. It was the hotel staff who handed over the complaint of the tourist to the police.
Police said that they could not interact with the tourist as he was in a hurry to go to airport to catch his flight to Canada. He was checking his belongings just before he vacated the hotel, when he found the cash kept in his wallet missing, police added.
He was on a short visit to Chennai.
