The girl Induja died at Kilpauk Medical College Hospital a few minutes after she was admitted, while her mother Renuka and younger sister Nivedhika are said to be critical with 50 percent and 20 per cent injuries respectively. Her father Shanmugam (48) is in Dubai for work.
It is said that the accused, Akash (25) was chased and caught by neighbours and handed over to police, though the latter is yet to confirm the detention. Akash, a college dropout, is known to Induja's family as he lives on the same Saraswathi street and he often makes casual visits to their house, said police sources.
Akash is said to have proposed to Indhuja, a BE graduate, a few months ago, which she reportedly rejected. However, he has continued with his one-sided affair. After Indhuja got placed in a company recently, her parents started looking for an alliance and coming to know of it, Akash has allegedly threatened Indhuja of dire consequences.
On Monday night too, Akash visited their house and got into an argument with Indhuja. In a fit of a rage, he took out a can of petrol he had kept in his two-wheeler and poured it on her before setting her ablaze with his cigarette. As Indhuja was engulfed in fire, Renuka and Nivedhika tried to put out the fire, but sustained injuries. Hearing their cries, neighbours rushed to the house and sent all three to KMC in an ambulance.
