The first phase of campus recruitment for 2017-18 will be held between December one and 10, an IIT-M release said on Thursday.
Apple Inc is coming to IIT-M campus for placements for the first time. The other first-time companies, who have registered for the first phase of placements, included Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), UBS AG, Nasdaq, Alvarez and Marsal India Private Limited, Country Garden, Halma India, Rubrik, and Sekisui Chemical.
Traditional recruiters such as Microsoft, Samsung R and D, Goldman Sachs, Eaton, Schlumberger, Mahindra, Intel, Bajaj, EXL, Citi, Larsen and Toubro have also registered for recruitment this year.
Nineteen companies have advertised international profiles, most of which were for positions in Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and the US.
Speaking about this year’s placement, Prof. Manu Santhanam, Advisor, Training and Placement, IIT-M, said, “Our students and staff at the IIT-M placement office have worked hard to bring in a large number of recruiters to the campus.
‘’We have already seen a major jump in the number of Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs), so we are hoping that the success translates into the placements too,’’ he said.
About 43 per cent of the recruiters were from core engineering R & D sector, 25 per cent from finance / analytics / consulting sectors, and 32 per cent from the IT sector.
The Institute will host more than 50 start-ups this year, the release said. As many as 114 PPOs have been received this year by IIT-M students as against 73 the preceding year.
More than 1,100 students have registered for placements across different study streams and departments this year. The number was expected to increase, as more research scholars become eligible (this happens as and when they achieve a specific target in their research programme).
About 35 students have opted for deferred placements as they were either pursuing start-up ventures or planning to apply for higher studies.
This year, with a view of reducing the stress faced by the students in the early phase of the process, IIT-M has done away with the ‘Graveyard Slot,’ which begins in the early hours of day one (December 1) usually from midnight to dawn.
