Three women from city win Sai awards

The Sri Sathya Sai Award for Human Excellence has been awarded to three Chennai women — Dr Sarada Menon — the first woman psychiatrist of India, Prof Prema Pandurang — a spiritual leader and Kousalya Periasamy — Founder, Positive Women’s Network.

The award was presented by the Sri Sathya Sai Loka Seva Trust at a function to celebrate the 92nd birth anniversary of Sri Sathya Sai Baba in Karnataka on Thursday.

 Sarada, through her NGO, Schizophrenia  Research Foundation  (SCARF), has brought relief to thousands of people suffering from mental disorders. The city-based NGO reaches out to communities in urban slums and villages to create awareness about mental disorders. 

Prema Pandurang is a spiritual leader well versed in the Vedas, Upanishads and Shastras and has dedicated her life to revive the ideals and values of Indian culture and educate people on our scriptures through a Veda Pathashala near Chennai.

Kousalya Periasamy has helped millions of HIV+ persons, regain their confidence and live a life of dignity through her institution Positive Women’s Network (PWN) in Chennai.

 TAFE Chairman and CEO Mallika Srinivasan, speaking on behalf of the awards’ organising committee ,said, “These exemplary women are powerful beacons of hope for the world and for all women.”
