Nagarajan, Deepa to file papers today

Three prominent candidates are likely to file their nominations before the Returning Officer on Monday, the last date for filing of papers for the ensuing by-election to the RK Nagar constituency.

MGR Amma Deepa (MAD) Peravai founder and former chief minister J Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa Madhavan, Nadigar Sangam secretary actor Vishal, and BJP candidate Karu Nagarajan, are expected to file their nominations.

Until Saturday, as many as 30 candidates including 2 (primary and dummy) from the AIADMK, 2 from DMK, one each from Desiya Makkal Sakthi Katchi, Kamarajar Deseeya Congress, Naam Tamilar Katchi, Republican Party of India and United States of India party, and 21 independent candidates, including sidelined AIADMK leader TTV Dinakaran had filed their nominations.

The scrutiny of nominations would take place on Tuesday and the eligible candidates can withdraw their nominations until December 7 and the final list of candidates in the fray would be known by then.

The polling was scheduled on December 21, while the counting had been scheduled to December 24 and the entire election process would be completed by December 26.

Sources from the ruling party said that the respective Ministers who were allocated areas during the rescinded by-election to the same constituency would involve them in active electioneering from Monday onwards. They would campaign for AIADMK presidium chairman E Madhusudhanan.

The ruling party had also instructed its functionaries from elsewhere in the state to focus on the by-election and had ordered them to rush to Chennai.

The DMK, which had already started the campaign from Kasimedu a few days ago, is expected to intensify its poll work.

The alliance partners except the CPM to join the DMK candidate N Maruthu Ganesh while the left party had announced that it would campaign from its own stage for the DMK.

Sources said Dinakaran too was mobilising his supporters and would involve in active electioneering soon after a symbol was allocated to him.

Kanimozhi urges EC to prevent money distribution
The Election Commission should take stringent measures to prevent money distribution in the RK Nagar by-election, said DMK women’s wing secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi. After conducting a consultation meeting in the DMK office in New Washermenpet, she addressed the media and said the DMK will win in the RK Nagar by-poll and surprise the Centre. “In a democratic country, whoever wants to contest election can. In such a condition, actor Vishal contesting the election is not a surprise and this cannot affect the DMK’s prospects,” she said and added that people are completely against the government thus EC should keenly prevent money distribution.
3 TTV men held for violating model code of conduct
Tondiarpet police arrested three men belonging to TTV Dinakaran’s group for raising slogans against other parties contesting in the bypoll.
The three, Babu alias Bureau Babu (52) of Washermanpet, Selvam alias Photo Selvam (48) of Tondiarpet and Thangamani (56) of Tiruvottiyur were arrested based on a complaint by a flying squad led by election officer Selvakumar on charges of raising slogans against other contesting parties when Dinakaran came to file his nomination papers at R K Nagar. The trio have been booked under Sections 143 and 171 (C) of the IPC. Meanwhile, police have detained 13 history-sheeters and repeated offenders as a precautionary measure taking up the number of those in custody beyond 100. Among those detained on Saturday, Otteri Sivanandham, Marudhupandian, Murugan and Janarthanan have many cases pending against them and weapons like machetes were seized from them.
