The residents also feel that they are left in the lurch, whenever there is heavy rain, as the area completely becomes an island, marooning many of them. Residents want the officials to take up necessary works as soon as possible.
According to residents, whenever there is a heavy rain, the surplus water from a lake in their locality overflows, causing flooding in the area. “Additionally, every time it rains, it is very difficult for us to walk on the streets as it does not have any drainage system. Our streets become water-logged within an hour of rain” said Sumathi, a resident and homemaker.
Motorists likewise complained that when it rains and the streets are flooded, they find it extremely difficult to navigate. “Often, the two-wheelers slip on the street, causing the riders to fall,” said Raghu, owner of a shop in Indira Nagar.
According to the residents, this is the main street of the locality which connects the area to other areas like Gundumedu, Rmk Nagar and Vandalur. However, with constant flooding during rains, and sewage water mixing with the flood water, residents are apprehensive about the implications on health, especially among children.
When contacted, Executive Officer, Old Perungalathur, Kamal Raj, said, “We are planning to take up drainage related works on the streets in question. We are in the process of inspecting the area, after which we work on rectifying the problem will start.”
