Two fish vendors dead, 14 injured in accident

Two fish vendors were killed and 14 others, including three women suffered injuries after a sand-laden lorry rammed a stationary mini van on Chennai-Bengaluru Highway near Sunguvarchatram in the wee hours of Wednesday.

The deceased, Kalappan (36) of Sirumangadu village and Dharma (30) of Kancheepuram, were on their way to the Kasimedu fishing harbour to buy fish. When the van stopped near Mabakkam bus stop near Sunguvarchatram, a sand-laden lorry, coming from Vellore, ran amok and rammed the van from behind.

While Kalappan died on the spot, the others in the minivan suffered grievous injuries. Sriperumpudur police on information rushed to the spot and sent the injured to the Government Hospital.

However, Dharma was declared brought dead. The remaining injured persons were transferred to RGGGH. Police have launched a hunt for the lorry driver.
