Madras HC move to clean pending criminal appeals turns a cropper
The Madras High Court’s bid to dispose criminal appeals pending for the past 10 years turned out to be a big flop, as the special sitting by benches on Saturday failed to draw adequate response from both the litigants and their advocates.

Chief Justice Indira Banerjee had constituted a special sitting by three judges, Justices N Kirubakaran, MV Muralidharan and N Satish Kumar, which they sat at 10.30 am on Saturday.
But the response was so limited that most of the cases were merely adjourned for lack of advocates, resulting in the sitting concluding in just about an hour.
Madras High Court Advocates Association President G Mohanakrishnan said, “Even though a circular to this effect was issued by the High Court Registry as early as December 29, the message seems to have not reached the lawyers in time going by the poor response.”
Also, wondering as to whether the initiative is a one-time move or to be held regularly on all Saturdays, he added that the advocates seem to be interested in availing their holidays than attending to additional work on Saturday.
The December 29 circular had urged the advocates/litigants to furnish the left out 10-year-old pending criminal appeals, if any, to the Registrar (Judicial) and sought for their co-operation to reduce the pendency of such decade-old old criminal appeals.
