Woman kills self hours after husband’s death

Uma Maheswari’s body washed ashore near Besant Nagar and was retrieved by the Shastri Nagar police. The police came to know about her husband’s disease and the reason for her suicide after trying to identify her.

Uma’s husband Prakashwaran, a resident of Mylapore, was diagnosed with stomach cancer six months ago.

Prakashwaran’s health deteriorated and doctors reportedly told Uma that his days were numbered.

On Monday evening, after Prakashwaran’s condition worsened, Uma left their house and sent her son Kesvan a message a few hours later over phone stating that she can’t imagine living without her husband and asked him to be with his uncle.

According to the police, while Prakashwaran died on Monday night, Uma must have drowned either on Monday night or Tuesday morning.

“She must have walked into the sea behind the lighthouse and her body washed ashore within few hours on Tuesday morning,” said an officer.

Her body was sent to Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem examination.
