Building lease: Madras HC directive to prisoner society

Holding that it is unimaginable that a nine-storey building on 12 grounds in Teynampet owned by the Tamil Nadu Discharged Prisoners Aid Society was leased out for a meagre sum of Rs 10 lakhs as advance for a period of 45 years from 2005, the Madras High Court has directed the society to provide the details of the officials who fixed the lease amount.

Justice N Kirubakaran in his order said besides the meagre lease amount, the rent of Rs 30,000 per month is negligible. Therefore, the DGP must file a report of officials who had taken the decision and details of all the directors of Quanta Engineers and Promoters and Real Value Technologies who is the present lessee.

Noting that for decades together, properties of the society located across the state have now fallen in the hands of lumpen elements and that is the reason why the police are unable to get the basic details of the properties and the monthly rent paid by the persons who are in possession of such properties, Justice Kirubakaran directed the district officials of the society to contact the district collectors to get details of the properties possessed by the society.

Also, the judge on warning that the court will be compelled to summon the home secretary as well as the DGP, if the details are not collected by the prison authorities, posted the plea to January 22.
