Police to bring back Nathuram

The team led by Additional Commissioner HM Jayaram also has joint commissioner (west) Santhosh Kumar, an assistant commissioner, three inspectors and two sub-inspectors. A police source told DT Next that bringing Nathuram to Chennai would take time, as it involves a lot of steps right from applying for his custody to getting prisoner transit warrant. 

Though three days of police custody is usually granted in such cases, city police have decided to seek at least week-long custody of Nathuram in order to interrogate him over the Kolathur jewellery heist and to recover the stolen jewels. Nathuram has reportedly confessed to Rajasthan police that he sold the jewels in Chennai itself, which can be traced only after taking him to the ones who bought it, police said. 

In November, Nathuram and his accomplice Dinesh Choudhury drilled holes and escaped with 3.5 kg gold from Kolathur. Hot on their trail, the city police and their counterparts in Rajasthan managed to arrest Choudhury, Nathuram’s wife Rani, father Chennaram, and relatives Ellaram, Shankar Lal and Dauram in Rajasthan. 

However, this success was marred by the death of Maduravoyal inspector Periyapandian, who died when the city team surrounded Nathuram in Pali district in Rajasthan on December 12 night. Meanwhile, Rajasthan police is continuing investigations into inspector Periyapandian’s death after being mistakenly shot at by inspector Munisekar.
