Jihana was a stay-at-home mother, while her husband Siraksha (39) worked in a software firm on Anna Salai. The couple had a two-and-a-half year-old son Pari and a five-monthold daughter Rejiya.

The family recently moved into the upmarket Bollineni Hillside apartments in Nookampalayam near Perumbakkam. The police said, the family returned to Chennai on January 18 after spending Pongal holidays with Jihana’s mother Nita in Gujarat.

The next day, there was a quarrel between the couple and Siraksha reportedly went missing.

His mobile was not reachable, and he did not report to work either. The deceased, who was depressed over her husband leaving, constantly spoke to her mother over phone and said she wanted to end her life.

On Monday, Jihana’s phone was not reachable and a panicked Nita asked her relatives in Chennai to check on Jihana. When they reached her house on Monday night, the door was locked from inside. They broke into the apartment with the help of neighbours, and found Jihana hanging from ceiling. Her children were lying flat on the bed and their hands were found tied.

Police believe they were suffocated to death using a pillow. All three bodies have been sent to Chromepet Government Hospital for post-mortem. A search is on for the missing husband. The police also found a suicide note in the house.

Husband constantly abused Jihana: Mother
Nita, a widow, who reached Chennai on Monday evening told the police that her daughter was constantly tortured by Siraksha.

The couple, who has been married for four years, returned to Chennai from Gujarat, following which they had a fight and Siraksha deserted her. Jihana fell into depression and often spoke about ending her life. The police searched the house and found a suicide note written in Gujarati, which Nita confirmed was her daughter’s handwriting. In the note, Jihana claimed she had to take the extreme step of killing her children as she was left with no other choice. She added that after her death Siraksha could marry a girl of his choice and at least keep her happy. Pallikaranai police, who are investigating the incident, have booked Siraksha for abatement of suicide and have launched a hunt for him.
