Kavitha (28) had come to the new showroom in Porur along with her son, R Yuvan, on Wednesday. As they were proceeding to the third floor of the shop, Yuvan apparently pulled himself free from his mother and ran up to the third floor.
Sources said the accident happened when the boy tried to peek down from across the railing on the third floor. The glass panel that acts as a barrier was missing under the railing, which Yuvan did not notice. As a result, he lost balance and fell down to the second floor.
The boy’s fall and his mother’s cries triggered a flutter in the showroom. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital in the neighbourhood. He underwent a surgery on Thursday, and is said to be in a critical condition even now.
However, his parents, Rajkumar, a carpenter, and Kavitha did not prefer a formal complaint against the showroom after they were assured that the retail chain would take care of all the medical expenses incurred.
Yuvan is studying UKG at a private school in Iyyapanthangal. The couple has another son. The business in the showroom remained unaffected after the gap in the railing was temporarily fixed on Thursday
About two years ago, a woman had met with an accident at another showroom of the same group at Chrompet. In that case, the woman’s hand was fractured at three places. Even in that case, the injured person preferred not to file a formal complaint after the shop managers promised to foot the hospital bill.
