Though public co-operated for the initiative at many places, a good number of motorists were not aware of the plan, as it was announced only a day ago. A few policemen also opined that the announcement should have been made at least a week ago so that it would have reached the people.
“Those who missed the news on newspapers and television were surprised, and some irritated for stopping abruptly in the middle of the road. Steps must have been taken at least a week ago and people should be made aware of such a gesture through promos on TV and FM channels,” said a traffic policeman on condition of anonymity. With limited time, even cops were not prepared to implement it.
“In traffic signals, we can stop vehicles. But other motorists using the roads between the signal continued with their journey. So, we were not sure if we implemented it in letter and spirit. Also, when the vehicles stop at the signals, pedestrians automatically start walking on the zebra crossing, so controlling them was also difficult,” said a traffic sub-inspector.
Vasudevan, a retired professional, was of the view that stalling traffic to pay tribute to martyrs doesn’t make sense, pointing out that it would lead to mayhem after two minutes of silence as motorists would be in a hurry to leave. “It’s best practised at government offices, schools, colleges where it is possible to control the crowd,” he said. However, when contacted, higher officials maintained that such a gesture is not new and is followed every year.
