The drone survey for Madhavaram (Zone 3), Tondiarpet (Zone 4), Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar (Zone 6), Ambattur (Zone 7) and Anna Nagar (Zone 8) has been completed. “The drone has five cameras, which capture images at a rapid speed and create a 3D-imagery,” said the official, adding that they had to get prior permission from various agencies, including Ministry of Home Affairs, Intelligence Bureau, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Ministry of Defence.

The data will however be first screened by the Ministry of Defence for sensitive information. The drone survey is a part of the GIS mapping project, which also includes a base map preparation and a door-to-door survey. The official also added that door-to-door survey is still under way.

“Due to the exhaustive nature of the exercise, the door-to-door survey is taking time,” said the official, adding that the data from the onground and drone surveys will go hand in hand. The idea behind the GIS mapping is to map all the existing properties and utilities.

Following this, there will be geotagging of the buildings. Using this, the Corporation will also update data related to properties in the city, gain a clearer understanding of their value, track property tax evasions and identify encroachments.
