It also gave the 23-year-old Dashwanth Sekhar 46 years in jail for various charges apart from the murder. Dashwanth had raped and murdered the daughter of an IT professional, in the first week of February last year when he was living in Mugalivakkam with his family.
He was arrested when the incident came to light but was released on bail in September. Even though Dashwanth pleaded for minimum punishment for his crimes, judge P Velmurugan pronounced his verdict after convicting him of murder, abduction and illegal confinement, sexual assault and tampering with evidence.
Earlier, while being produced at Chengalpattu Mahila Court on December 13, Dashwanth had said that he had killed the girl only to deny it later. Apart from this case, Dashwanth is also accused of murdering his mother Sarala Sekhar on December 2 at their Kundrathur house before he fled with her jewellery. The police tracked him to Mumbai but he managed to escape from police custody. He was, however, nabbed within 24 hours and brought back to Chennai.
