Six youngsters, who allegedly robbed an advocate near Kundrathur after stopping his vehicle on the pretext of seeking a lift, were arrested and the stolen valuables were seized from them on Wednesday.

The accused – Ganesh (19), Suresh (19), Madhavan (21), Venkatesan (20), Deepanraj (19) and Raj Ganesh (20) – hail from Thandalam village off Tambaram-Maduravoyil bypass road. The police also suspect that the same gang could have been behind several similar incidents reported in the area.

The incident took place on Tuesday night when advocate Sivasubramaniam, a legal advisor for a private firm in Ambattur Industrial Estate, was returning home in Tambaram on his two-wheeler. As he was riding along the by-pass road near Thandalam, a teenager sought a lift. Not knowing that the youth was part of a gang, Sivasubramanian stopped his bike to pick him up.

However, the boy took the key away from the bike. Within seconds, he was surrounded by the gang, who allegedly threatened him at knife point and snatched his mobile, cash and other valuables before fleeing the spot.

Based on a complaint from Sivasubramanian, Kundrathur police registered a case and began investigation. The police managed to trace the offenders with inputs from locals.
