The event which was originally planned for the afternoon was delayed as they did not have permission to hold their peaceful demonstration in front of Rajarathinam stadium in Egmore. However, a small gathering arranged the words ‘Save Syria’ on the sidewalk later in the evening and observed the candlelight vigil.
The fora had already knocked on the doors of the international community and the United Nations to put an end to the crisis through intervention besides taking steps to enforce immediate ceasefire.
Their petitions stated that the United Nations is bound to take all steps and measures to stop the ongoing war in Syria and sought to arrange for diplomatic negotiation between Syrian government and rebels for peace talk under UN’s supervision.
Tamil Nadu students and youth federation coordinator Loyola Mani and Valamana Tamizhagam Katchi coordinator Jagadesh Jayakumar had made representations in this regard to the diplomatic missions of Russia and United States of America in the city besides the field office of United Nation’s Children Fund (UNICEF) here.
“The proposed tribunals should not be compromised in any manner. The assets of those held accountable for war crimes should be frozen and be spent for rehabilitation measures. Failing which, the member countries which are against global terrorism should jointly leave the international body,” said Loyola Mani.
