The actor-turned-politician was visiting the college to unveil a statue of the late chief minister MGR and address the public gathering – his first since he confirmed his political plunge in December last year. Motorists, who were stuck on the road since early evening, had to be diverted via other routes to ease the congestion. The disturbance compounded further when Rajinikanth arrived and waved at everyone around through his car’s sunroof.

Supporters of Rajini Makkal Mandram as well as passers-by took to chanting his name, clicking photos and yelling out to the film icon, as several cars, buses and two-wheelers were stranded unable to move even an inch for longer than an hour. It was only after Rajinikanth’s car had made its way into the college with the help of security, was the traffic dispersed slowly and the public heaved a sigh of relief.

Residents, pedestrians, public transport from Koyambedu and vehicles on Poonamallee High Road were badly affected earlier in the day due to several banners and posters put up by fans of Rajinikanth.

Activist Traffic Ramaswamy led a group of people who were protesting against the star’s apathy to the problems faced by the public. “This is a clear violation. It is unfortunate to see a personality like Rajinikanth encouraging such activities,” he complained.

When asked about the hoardings following the event, Rajinikanth responded, “Some fans have erected banners. This is in violation of the HC order and I request them not to indulge in such activities anymore.”

Meanwhile, Rajinikanth’s friend and political contemporary Kamal Haasan responded to the controversy, stating that, “Change must come from within.”
