MGR Film Institute set to become varsity

Minister for Information and Publicity Kadambur Raju on Tuesday informed the Assembly that steps are in place to upgrade MGR Government Film and Television Institute to a University.

Raju made this disclosure while responding to Congress legislator H Vasantha Kumar who sought to know whether the state has plans to launch another Film Institute in his Nanguneri constituency. 

“The request would be taken to the notice of Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and the state is taking constructive measures to upgrade the institute into a university,” he said. “Once the upgradation takes place, the government would take steps to open the institute’s branches elsewhere in the state. Such is the wish of not just Vasantha Kumar but also from other legislators from south, and the list also includes me,” Raju added. 

Raju observed that the one here bearing the name of MGR is the lone operated by a state while there are two-other institutes run by the Centre one in Pune and the other in Kolkatta. The Minister noted that the institute here is the only one which offers six programs as bachelor degree courses. The other two institutes continue to offer only diploma courses. He also noted that the state had enhanced the funding for final year project short-film to Rs 50,000 from Rs 15,000 per person.
