Madras University to hold syndicate polls
Madras University will conduct the elections on March 31 to pick six members to the syndicate by the Senate from its members and two members to academic council by Senate, who are not engaged in teaching.

A notification was issued in the Tamil Nadu government gazette in this regard. The tenure of the existing members will be over on March 29 this year. The new members will hold office for three years to take vital decisions of the university.
“It is hereby notified that the election to syndicate and the Academic Council will be held under Section 18(a) and Section 23(a) of the Madras University Act, 1923 respectively,” the government gazette said.
Accordingly, the newly elected member will hold office as member of the syndicate for a period of three years.
The term of the present syndicate ends on March 28. The election is to elect members to the new syndicate which should assume office latest by March 31. The tenure of the new syndicate is till March30, 2021. The election will be conducted on the date of the annual meeting of the Senate, scheduled to be held on March 31, 2018.
On the election of one member to the Senate by the Academic Council from its own body, the gazette said that Dr Harold Nirmal Kumar, Associate Professor of commerce department at Agurchand Manmull Jain College, Meenambakkam has been duly elected to the Senate by the Council of whom not less than five shall be teachers of affiliated colleges.
