The police are aware that many of these criminals are ganja smokers, but it was during the interrogation of some suspects that they learned that a particular brand of cough syrup was among the preferred intoxicants.

“It helps them to commit offences without being bothered by anything else,” a police offcier told DTNext. Based on this, police checked at least two medical shops located on Arunachala Naicken street in Chintadripet and found a large stock of the brand of syrup there.

The owners confessed selling it without prescription because it was only a cough syrup. Three men owning the two medical shops were brought to the station, but were allowed to go on station bail after booking a case against them.

Experienced police officers in the citypolice noted that most of the criminals often consume alcohol or drugs before getting ready for crimes. “But a cough syrup being used as boost is a new trend” said a police officer.
