Shops shut in Purasawalkam over metro route

Traders in Purasawalkam on Tuesday closed their business establishments in protest against the proposed realignment of second phase of Chennai metro rail. Several shops downed the shutters, in compliance with the call issued by Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangagalin Peravai led by Vikrama Raja.

The realignment of Madhavaram-Sholinganallur (44.6kms) route, under the second phase of CMRL network, which would cover 109kms, mostly connects far-off suburbs to the busy IT corridor.

The protesting traders argued that the earlier alignment largely did not cut through their area, whereas the realignment runs through the heart of the business district of Purasawalkam, affecting many traders.

However, CMRL officials argued that no alignment has been finalised. “We have sent the proposed alignment only to the Centre. We have not finalised any alignment. Traders have conveyed their grievances to us,” a CMRL spokesperson said, adding that it was for the government to look in to such public grievances and not CMRL.
