The students, Kaviyarasu, Marudhupandian, Somasundaram, all students of a city college, were secured from Basin Bridge railway station from a train bound for Gummidipoondi, around 2.55 pm.

On Thursday morning, the railway police control room received a call that there were students who were carrying weapons on an MMC-bound train. But police could not identify them. It was the RPF personnel at Moor Market Complex who grew suspicious about this gang as the train departed from the station. They alerted the RPF team in Basin Bridge station about the students.

When RPF constables Sumit Kumar and Yogesh Kumar Meena boarded the train from Basin Bridge, the students realised that they were in trouble and tried to throw a bag out through the window.

They then tried to escape, but the personnel managed to nab the trio and retrieved the bag.

The bag not only contained four machetes, there was also a small quantity of explosives inside.

All three were handed over to Government Railway Police (GRP), who have registered a case and are interrogating them.

The incident came barely two months after the arrest of 14 Pachaiyappa’s College students for attacking two Presidency College students with weapons at Pattaraivakkam railway station.
