Thousands of families living in and around Pallavaram are going without proper water supply despite Chennai and surrounding areas getting adequate rainfall last monsoon. People said they were unable to perform routine activities as, on most days, they had a single pot of water.

Some of the worst affected neighbourhoods were NSK Nagar, MGR Naga, Anna Nagar, Moombabigai Nagar, Radha Nagar, Keelkatalai and Hastinapuram. Residents said there were days when they had no water at all.
The Palar water reached them only once in a month. Earlier, it was supplied once a week, residents said. The lorries which used to supply water to their locality had also reduced daily trips from 5 to 1 per day, residents said adding that they needed Palar water at least twice a week. They had recently staged a protest too.
“We are paying taxes but we are not getting water. We are forced to buy water to fill up our sumps daily from private water suppliers. As the summer is approaching, we cannot rely on private suppliers as the demand and cost will be high,” said Kalyani, a resident of Hastinapuram. The officials had promised five tanker lorries of water daily to these localities after the residents’ protest.
Pallavaram municipal commissioner K Sivakumar said, “The scheme of getting water from Chembarambakkam Lake to Pallavaram Municipality is in process. It will be completed in the next four months and the water problem will be solved.”
