The civic body’s budget this year saw an allocation of Rs 200 crore to the Bridges department, a steep hike from the Rs 7 crore in the revised estimate for 2017-18 fiscal.
Officials said they will take up the construction of new bridges at the level crossings in Tondiarpet and Villivakkam, which has been lying in the cans for the past few years.
In Tondiarpet, the level crossings LC2A and LC2B, located near Ennore High Road and Manali Road, are closed multiple times during the day creating a huge traffic congestion.
A senior Corporation official said, “The Corporation has submitted project reports to the government for the construction of a new bridges at LC 1 in Villivakkam at a cost of Rs 59 crore and LC2A and LC2B in Tondiarpet at an estimated budget of Rs 137 crore. Once the funds are sanctioned, tenders will be called.”
The civic body will also be undertaking the approach work for the Elephant Gate bridge, where a part of the work is also handled by the Railways. The corporation is collaborating with the Traffic Police, studying the traffic situation before proceeding with the project.
Hemraj V, a 27-year-old resident of Royapuram, said that the Elephant Gate bridge, which is open only for two-wheelers currently, creates a huge traffic congestion during peak hours.
“The bridge is also in a bad condition and cracks have appeared on the surface. In Tondiarpet too, the level crossings cause a bottleneck, as the goods trains take a long time to pass.”
