3 killed as two lorries collide on GST Road

Three persons died and four others were injured when two lorries collided head-on near Maduranthakam in Kancheepuram on GST Road on Thursday morning

The deceased were identified as E Velu (37), a resident of Maduranthakam who drove one of the vehicles, and two load men – D Mettu Kumar (25) and Ramajothi (40), both hailing from Bihar. 

According to the police, a load lorry driven by Vijay was returning from Tiruchy to Chennai on Thursday morning. When the vehicle was on GST Road near the Maduranthakam bus depot, the driver lost control of the lorry. It hit and broke through the centre median, swerved to the wrong side of the road and collided with the lorry that Velu was driving, proceeding towards Tindivanam from Chennai. 

In the impact, both vehicles flipped over. While the Velu died on the spot, the load men on his lorry died as they were being rushed to the hospital nearby. 

Alerted by other motorists, personnel from ranthakam police station rushed to the spot and sent six of the injured people to Chengalpattu Government Hospital. The doctors declared Mettu Kumar and Ramajothi brought dead. 

Vijay, driver of the other lorry which jumped track, escaped with minor injuries and undergoing treatment with three others. Following the accident, the traffic was affected on the busy GST Road from 5 am to 8.30 am.
