Police said that Jayakumar, employed as a corporation conservancy worker in Zone-5, was standing on a slab above the well. As he was speaking on the phone, he apparently failed to notice the 15 feet deep well, and slipped into it, police said.
It was Inspector Jawahar Peter attached to Washermanpet police station, on duty at Guindy in view of the protests, who heard a noise from the well. When he saw a man inside, he jumped inside to rescue him.
After the inspector jumped in to the well, other police personnel there dropped a rope and a chair. Using them, Jayakumar was pulled out to safety first. Later, the policemen pulled Inspector Jawahar Peter out of the well using the rope.
