The incident happened on Friday when the victim David was returning in his car after withdrawing cash from a bank. While he was waiting at a signal near Dhanalakshmi Nagar, two transgenders — A Salma (26) and T Sumithra (20) — knocked on his car window seeking alms.

When David gave them Rs 50, they asked for his bag to offer blessings. When he handed over the bag, they took Rs 2 lakh cash in it, chanted something and kept the cash back in the bag and returned it.

However, when he checked the cash again, Rs 54,000 was missing. He looked for the transgenders but couldn’t find them.

On suspicion, he filed a complaint at Virugambakkam police station and a team secured the transgenders. During the interrogation, they reportedly admitted to stealing the amount.

They were booked under Section 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and remanded in judicial custody.

The investigation officer said that both of them are residents of Pulianthope and have indulged in thefts in the past. However, this is the first time, a formal complaint was lodged against them, he added.
