One dead, 24 injured in twin bus accidents

A 33-year-old woman died while 14 others were injured after a government bus they were travelling in rammed into a truck near Chengalpattu early on Sunday.

R Nirmala, a resident of Anniyur near Villupuram, received severe head injuries and died without responding to treatment at Chengalpattu government hospital where the injured are also undergoing treatment. 

The police said that the driver of Villupuram-bound bus, P Murugan of Neyveli, rammed the bus into a container truck at Paranur toll-gate allegedly due to the absence of warning lights on the truck. The driver too was hurt in the incident. Among those injured, the condition of Vasantha, a resident of Otteri, is said to be critical.

The accident affected the traffic on Chennai-Tiruchy national highway for a couple of hours until both the vehicles were removed with the help of cranes. 

In another accident on East Coast Road, 10 passengers of Chennai-bound bus from Puducherry were injured as the bus toppled after hitting a median near Kovalam junction. The police said that a two-wheeler had suddenly come onto the bus’ path and to avoid hitting the bike, the driver swerved, hit the median and the bus toppled. Further investigation is underway.
