The incident happened near Maraimalai Nagar. Kaasi Vishwanathan boarded an unreserved compartment of Rock Fort Express train after the event and sat on the doorstep, with his legs dangling outside.

Even though other commuters told him to pull his legs in, Vishwanathan turned them a deaf ear, plugged in his earphones and started listening to music. Around 11.30 pm, the train was speeding towards Maraimalai Nagar station and as it entered the platform, Vishwanathan’s legs hit the edge of the platform and the lower half of his legs were chopped off. He started to scream in pain and on seeing him in a pool of blood, other passengers pulled the emergency chain and stopped the train.

Soon they and the RPF personnel present in the train jumped off the train and began to look for the separated body parts.

Later, after the legs were recovered, Vishwanathan was taken to Chengalpet by the same train. After reaching Chengalpet junction, he was rushed to Chengalpet government hospital and was later shifted to Chennai government hospital. The Tambaram Railway police have registered a case.
